Why I'm Voting for Jan
The following was sent to the Colorado Springs Gazette today as a letter to the editor:
The two people who wrote in response to Jan Hejtmanek's letter last Friday missed the point (Letters, October 6). Yes, Hejtmanek's opponent Amy Stephens is the incumbent who has represented Colorado House District 20 for the past two years. However, Hejtmanek's point was that Stephens' campaign for reelection seems to be based solely on the R next to her name. Stephens' web site lacks any information about her views or positions on any issues, and she has thus far refused to participate in public forums or debates with Hejtmanek.

From a Constituent
I saw your new sign on Woodmen Road west of Powers Blvd Monday. The sign looks great.
You have done amazing things for our community and I hope you are very proud of that. You have kept us informed on all of the issues at a time when we've received little information from other local sources. I always know where you stand and I appreciate that tremendously.
Thank you for all you do!

WHERE'S MY OPPONENT?
It seems that the El Paso County Republican candidates' play book for 2008 is to wait out the campaign season virtually in hiding until the election, knowing that the odds are in their favor to be elected based solely on the solid conservative majority. Past voter behavior supports the strategy, which paints the local voter as so dependably partisan as to be blissfully ignorant of whether there was even a choice.

Respecting Our Veterans
On May 18th this year I had the privilege to participate in the inaugural Wounded Warriors Veterans Memorial motorcycle ride, along with over 300 other riding enthusiasts. It was the longest police escorted ride ever made in the county, and I was honored to be among the riders, many of whom were Veterans themselves. I look forward to doing it again next year.

Why I'm Running As a Democrat
When I first moved here in 1996, until 2004, when we returned from living overseas for two years, I was registered as an Independent. I thought being registered as such would lead to being better informed of candidates from all political parties. I couldn't have been more wrong. Here in El Paso County Independents (until only recently) were completely ignored and even shunned in the voting process by not being able to caucus or vote in any primary elections. It took me a while to figure that out.

TABOR, Or Not TABOR?
One of the many contacts I made at the Black Forest Festival on August 9th, was a gentleman by the name of Michael Shealy (he goes by Mikey), who later emailed me some questions regarding TABOR. Since TABOR is such a hot topic these days, a nebulus enigma to most people, and in fact has created the need for additional legislation that will appear on November's ballot, I thought it would be a good idea to post his questions and my response. You might want to grab a cup or glass of something first, it's not short. (I received Michael Shealy's permission to publish his question.)

Progressives Enter Monument's July 4th Parade In Force
Progressive ideals are beginning to take a foothold in House District 20, and one of the biggest testaments to that fact is evidenced in 2008's annual July 4th parade in the town of
In 2006 I'm fairly certain I was the only Democratic candidate to have ever walked in the parade. It was an odd experience in that I was greeted by many stony glares, some scattered boos, and more than a few cheers that raised my spirits.
